The Importance of Looking Beyond Diagnosis To See The Real Child Who Carries That Label: A Guide To Finding Solutions For Your Child

NeuroDevelopmental Movement® and sensory therapies can have a profound and life-changing impact on children with sensory, regulation, motor, academic, social, and physical challenges. NDM® can have a profound impact on early life trauma and has been used in adults to significantly improve outcomes following strokes and TBI.

But if you have looked into the work and heard that it is not an effective approach, we want to give you hope. Given that each brain is a universe unto itself, a truly effective neurodevelopmental program must consider deeply the complex and unique brain of each client. No two brains are the same and, interestingly, even if the diagnosis is anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, spectrum disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, oppositional defiant disorder, what matters is not the label but what the tested functional neurodevelopmental profile reveals. No two children with OCD, anxiety, or any of the disorders are the same as another child with the identical diagnoses.

Yet, there are those who propose that simply assigning a pre-packaged program of neurodevelopmental activities based on a diagnosis will fix the problem. In many cases parents do see some changes, but often growth is limited and soon the work ceases to make a difference. There are neurodevelopmental programs online that will sell you a package of activities based not on your child’s true needs, but on their diagnosis. And that is why the field has been considered less than legitimate. Superficial approaches can only provide superficial results.

As you consider how to move forward with your developmentally impaired child, please look for those who are, at best, NDM® certified, and if you cannot find one of our practitioners in your area, please make sure that your activity program is not based on your child’s diagnosis, but on a thorough assessment. Look for those who test visual, auditory, tactile, gross and fine motor activities, and speech – all of which give us information about the true nature of the client’s dysfunction.

We have worked with children who have fully recovered from spectrum disorders, from OCD, from anxiety disorders, from learning disabilities, from birth or adoption trauma. We want to make sure that this important work is not overlooked by the scientific community. Make sure that you work with practitioners who do not assign a program based on diagnosis. NDM® work is maximally effective when a thorough understanding of your child or adult family member’s brain has been derived from in-depth testing.

Replicating unfinished pieces of the Developmental Sequence – the path that NDM® uses to achieve our goals – is life changing and can be the therapy of the future. But, we know that the efficacy of the work can be undermined by under trained practitioners.

We want all children to thrive, to reach their potential. If you have tried a movement-based recovery program that did not work, look again and explore the work of those practitioners who understand and can assess your unique child.
